Help / Payments and money

Card or bank: what each one costs

Every invoice you send offers both. A card is instant and familiar; a bank payment is slower to clear but much cheaper on a large amount. Your customer picks.

Card

3.2% plus 30¢. Clears quickly, and it's what most people reach for without thinking.

The percentage keeps climbing with the size of the job, so a big invoice paid by card carries a real cost.

Bank

1%, and never more than $20 no matter how big the invoice is. The customer pays from their bank account rather than a card.

It takes a few days to clear rather than being instant. The invoice marks itself paid when it does.

Which to steer people to

Under a few hundred dollars, it barely matters. Take whatever's easiest for the customer.

Over a thousand, the cap is doing real work. One sentence when you send the invoice, saying they can pay from their bank, is worth more than most things you could do to your pricing.
