How you price work

Fieldsmith can price work three ways: an hourly rate, a price you set on each job, or a price book where each service has a set price. You pick one as your default in Settings → Pricing & invoicing, and you can still override it on any single job.

The three ways

By the hour: you set an hourly rate, and Fieldsmith multiplies it by how long the job is scheduled for. A two-hour job at $80/hr bills $160.

A price per job: you type the price on each job as you book it. Good if every job is a bit different.

A price book: you set a price for each service type once ($65 for a standard mow, $150 for a service call), and any job with that service type uses it.

Set your rate before you invoice anyone

Until you choose, Fieldsmith runs on an hourly rate of $75. That's a placeholder, not a recommendation. It's just a number the app has to start with.

This is the single most important thing to change before your first invoice goes out, because it's the number your customer gets billed.

Overriding one job

You can set a flat price on an individual job even if you normally bill hourly. The price on the job always wins over your default.

If a job is set to a flat price and you haven't typed one, Fieldsmith won't invoice it. It'll tell you the price is missing rather than quietly billing $0 or falling back to an hourly rate you didn't pick.
